A WEB STORY

Health and fitness practitioners are using tests that measure individuals’ metabolism rates to take the uncertainty out of weight loss and exercise.

Practitioners say the tests address the epidemic of obesity in the U.S.

Bethesda Sports and Health Club in Maryland has started a pilot program that includes measuring each participant’s individual metabolism to compute the best method for that individual to lose weight.

Some participants are losing weight by sleeping more or exercising at lower levels for longer periods of time; for others, their metabolism requires more frequent exercise and more frequent meals.

“The program gives people specific information so that weight loss and getting in shape are not frustrating and self defeating,” said Judy Samuels, nutrition and fitness instructor.

Knowing about their specific metabolic rates also helps participants stay motivated.

“They learn when they may be sabotaging themselves and that knowledge helps stop the counterproductive actions,” she said.

At least one club member reports noticeable change.

“It was great for me to physically see the difference, but, when I walked into the doctor’s office and saw the numbers, I was like wow,” said Karen Vander Lindt.

The program’s preliminary results are positive but, in the wake of fly-by-night diet programs, only prolonged weight-loss statistics will determine the metabolic program’s ultimate success.
